Being a real nature lover, I sometimes have the feeling when I am hiking in the wild that there is a chance I will disturb peaceful scenes such as the one I have painted here.

A mother grizzly can become aggressive and dangerous when approached by a “strange animal” such as a hiker; they are very protective of their young. I have heard of many accidents that followed encounters between bear cubs and inexperienced hikers, so I knew it would be difficult to see in the wild the image I had of what I wanted to paint. The only way I knew to get this close to bears in a natural setting was in my imagination. I feel very fortunate to be able to do this, and I think that this is a big advantage that artists have; we can imagine a scene with such reality that the impossible becomes possible.

In this painting, I wanted to show the wildness of the bear, but also the tenderness of the mother grizzly and her wonderful relationship with her cubs.
