One of the most beautiful big cats is surely the cougar or mountain lion (in Europe, we know it as the puma). When my father took me to the zoo as a small boy, he always wanted to show me the lions and tigers, but I was more attracted to that smaller and more lion-like cat as it reminded me of the cowboy and Indian stories I’d heard. Together with the lynx and the bobcat, the cougar is a true American.

As I grew older and more involved in nature and the out of doors, I learned that this species is on the decline. Its range is now reduced to the western states, yielding to the pressures of building and development.

My painting shows two young cougars, about six months old, symbolizing the hope of a bright future for one of the most magnificent creatures of the American wild.
