Synopsis:
Carl Brenders is one of the world's most accomplished nature painters. Specializing in wildlife, Brenders in no way neglects the natural settings in which mammals and birds live. Meticulously realistic, brilliantly observed, and exquisitely composed, his paintings take their place in an artistic tradition that goes back to John James Audubon, Louis Agassiz Fuertes, and Wolfgang Kuhnhert. With his growing reputation, he stands as equal beside such distinguished contemporaries as Roger Tory Peterson, Guy Coheleach, and Robert Bateman.
Fifty of Carl Brenders' finest paintings of North American wildlife - deer, wolves, cougars, foxes, squirrels, bears, and many different species of birds - make up this collection of recent work of the highly regarded and extremely successful nature painter. His first retrospective book, it is certain to become a collector's item.
Here, along with the fifty full-color reproductions of Brenders' works, are a tantalizing selection of his preliminary sketches. All are accompanied by an introduction and complete captions for the paintings written by the artist himself. Brenders freely discusses his sources of inspiration, describes his field experiences observing and photographing his animal subjects, and shares his own deep convictions about the importance of wildlife preservation and wilderness area conservation. In addition to these texts, the book offers a brief biography, with photographs of the painter, by Dana Cooper, who has written about numerous other contemporary nature artists.

I'd seen a couple of Carl Brenders prints before, so I knew what to expect from the book. Even so I wasn't prepared for the sheer quantity of absolutely stunning paintings this books contains. Not only that, but the artist, who writes beautifully in a relaxed and informative fashion, provides a summary of each painting, telling you lots of interesting stuff about it. It's a joy to read and certainly adds to the whole experience. The majority of the book concentrates on American subjects, the rest being devoted to Europe. This doesn't matter a jot, because the subjects are so well chosen you really don't care. You're too busy gaping at the artwork.
I've heard people bad mouth ultra realistic paintings, but they obviously don't get it. Brenders paintings are better than any photograph you'll see, including the Wildlife Photography of the Year Portfolios simply because the painter can manipulate his subject and his scene and the lighting is oh so good. Truly a masterpiece of a book.

Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2020This book comes from a wonderful series of nature books published in the 1980's aimed at young audiences (but useful for any curious person). What makes this book (and 3 others from the series) stand out is that it is illustrated by the renowned wildlife artist Carl Brenders. The illustration quality is such that this book goes beyond a normal nature book and also functions as an art book. Brenders is usually partial to painting cuddly mammals and birds in his fine art, but in this case challenges himself with sometimes strange, pokey or slimy sea animals. The results are amazing, and one wishes Brenders had spanned out into more unusual animals more throughout his fine art career. He has an elite eye for detail, knowing his animals like the back of his hand, but also imparts an aesthetic glow unseen in most illustration. His work is ultra detailed and he uses gouache and watercolor as his medium to get these details, which is more typical of pure illustration of the pre-computer period than fine wildlife art. This book is my personal favorite of the series, but all the Brenders illustrated volumes are a must have. These include: Birds of Prey, Animals of the Countryside, Animals of River and Pond and this book.
